After completing my education at Stokesley
Comprehensive school in 1976, I enrolled as a student nurse at
the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton where I qualified as a
Registered General nurse in 1979. I married in 1980 and accepted
a post as a staff nurse at Ripon hospital before taking an
extended break to have a family.
I returned to part time nursing agency work
in 1989, caring for the elderly in their own homes, before
having a career change to join the British Red Cross where I
taught first aid courses to child carers. As this was evening
work, I also joined the staff at Bilton Grange C.P. school as a
non-teaching assistant, working with a child with special needs,
on a one- to- one basis, until he left for high school. Having enjoyed teaching child carers, I
decided on another change of direction and accepted a job at
Woodlands Day nursery in 1994, where I especially enjoyed being
in the baby room caring for babies aged three months to eighteen
months old. Wendy and I met while working together at
Woodlands nursery and we kept in touch after she had left to
work at Smarties Day nursery in Ripley. We decided that our future lay in owning our
own child care business, so after months of hard work and
preparation we opened Bilton Grangers Out of School Club in
March 1998.

Boredom Busters
Born in Oxford of Yorkshire parents I have
always felt as if Yorkshire is my true birth right. I spent much
of my childhood moving around the country never really staying
in one place for very long.
Having qualified as a Nursery Nurse in
Dunstable Bedfordshire in 1980, I worked as a private nanny in
London. I moved back to Yorkshire in 1986 to take up maternity
nursing (looking after babies for the first 6 weeks) for a local
agency, and during this time I worked for Sir Thomas and Lady
lngilby at Ripley Castle. Eventually they offered me a nanny's
post, which I started in September 1986. I got married in Ripley
Church in January 1987 and lived in the village until just
before the birth of my first child in 1989 when we moved into
Harrogate. During my time at Ripley I had met and made friends
with the owner of Smarties Day Nursery (based in the village.)
and whilst my son was young I worked at the nursery when ever I
was needed. By the time my 2nd son was born in 1992 and was 8
weeks old I had returned to work at the nursery full time as the
deputy and in charge of the baby section. When another local
nursery (Woodlands Nursery) asked for help with relief staff I
volunteered and worked at both nurseries on a part time basis.
Whilst working at woodlands I met Moira. When I returned to my
full time post at Smarties Moira and I kept in touch and in
March 1998 we opened Bilton Grangers and the rest as they say is
history.
